Personal Spirit of Liberty

Subject: This blog is to allow me to put my daily thoughts into writing, however misconstrued they may be, in order to physically record my thoughts for later personal usage. The thoughts will compose of the general politics of the day, the movement and evolution of political thought in all strains including simple Democrat vs Republican, Left vs Right, etc. as well as internal struggles within movements, some of which are the most fascinating in my opinion. My opinion will probably be started multiple times on purpose to record my state of mind as well as to actually analyze other opinions and events. My thoughts will change over time for sure, as they are constantly evolving. I am not quite sure of the "right" or "wrong" in politics and this should record my journey to try to decide that. The title of the blog reflects my mentality towards this representing the "spirit of liberty" that the Judge Learned Hand referred to.

Purpose: More and more I find my political views changing everyday and feel the need to place them in a permanent form in order to better keep track of them as well as maybe someday use them to come to a final "resting place" for them, something I doubt will happen. This is meant to be a positive thing and I see no problem with someone changing a viewpoint within politics, it happens all the time of course. The only difference here is I am not running for public office and therefore am doing this out of my own free will to document it. This blog is not meant to be read by anyone but myself and will therefore be written as such. I do not mind others reading even though I couldn't understand why anyone would do so, but I should warn that it is not meant to be even coherent.

Inspiration: This blog is somewhat of a direct result of a class on US Political Thought that I am currently enrolled in. It has spurred an internal tornado of rethinking and analyzing my previously strongly held positions on political issues, candidates, foreign policy, and the public interest. Reading and researching the greatest political thinkers in our nations history and viewing the transition of thought to policy and from policy to doctrine within these writings has been one of the most important things I have done within the major and will have an important effect on anything I do in my future life and career. As I get towards the end of the class I have a strong need to continue the process started there and this is one outlet to do so.

Format: I want to update this quite often but may not do so until I find an event that fully convinces me to write on it. This may put a slow pace on the process but I will do as much as I can. I will also continue to read important political thought and theory which will supplement my writings periodically.

"The spirit of liberty is the spirit which is not too sure that it is right; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which seeks to understand the minds of other men and women; the spirit of liberty is the spirit which weighs their interests alongside its own without bias; the spirit of liberty remembers that not even a sparrow falls to earth unheeded; the spirit of liberty is the spirit of Him who, near two thousand years ago, taught mankind that lesson it has never learned, but has never quite forgotten; that there may be a kingdom where the least shall be heard and considered side by side with the greatest." -Learned Hand
